Morganatic bride

It’s a form of matrimony between people of different social status, an expedient to preserve privileges and titles of the Royal Family members, for example, because they could never be passed down to the wife and potential children born from wedlock. It makes clear that they will be excluded from the line of succession and they could never ascend to the throne.

Two of the most famous morganatic brides of the French Royal Family were the Marquise of Montesson and Madame de Maintenon, who even married the Sun King!
